Ferritic stainless steel pipes, known as stainless steel 409 pipes, are mainly made of 10.5–11.75% chromium and very little carbon (≤0.08%), with tiny amounts of titanium (up to 0.75%) added to stabilise the structure. These pipes have a yield strength of roughly 170–240 MPa and a moderate tensile strength of about 380–450 MPa. At high temperatures, SS 409 provides good oxidation resistance, formability, and weldability. It works well in exhaust and structural applications, particularly in mildly corrosive environments where strength and affordability are crucial, even though it is not as corrosion-resistant as austenitic grades.
