Austenitic stainless steel that contains molybdenum (2–3%), nickel (10–14%), and chromium (16–18%) is used to make stainless steel 316 and 316L electropolished pipes. The maximum carbon content of 0.03% in SS 316L lowers the possibility of carbide precipitation during welding. These pipes have a 40% elongation, a tensile strength of about 515 MPa, a yield strength of about 205 MPa, and outstanding corrosion resistance. These pipes are appropriate for ultra-high purity and sterile applications because the electropolishing process increases corrosion resistance, eliminates embedded impurities, and improves surface smoothness (Ra < 0.4 µm).
